Croatia’s Fakin Winery in Bataji, Istria, near the historic town of Motovun – where the winery also has a wine shop and restaurant – is a multi-generational family winery.
Fakin is Croatia’s most celebrated winery – having received the most awards of any in the country – and offers guests premium wine tasting and gastronomic experiences.
Today Marko Fakin leads the winery as winemaker and business entrepreneur – along with his wife Bety. Together they are a formidable team moving Fakin into the future – with plans to plant new vineyards and build a new winery – but never forgetting their heritage and traditions.
During a recent visit with U.S. importers Croatian Premium Wine, we had the opportunity to taste through the current portfolio including two wine that are currently available in the U.S. Both are ‘Fakin good’ introductions to Istria’s flagship varieties.
Fakin Malvazija 2022
You’ve struck Istrian gold with this marvelous Malvazija
Hand harvested from estate vineyards in Istria’s mountainous Motovun region, then fermented and aged in stainless steel, winemaker Marko’s award-winning Malvazija will have you saying, ”More, more, more!” With juicy flavors like apricot, melon, and peach cradled in silky-softness, this mouthwatering white is just the ticket for warm-weather sipping. Pair it with grilled fish, shellfish, chicken salad, veggie pasta, or creamy risotto – or simply serve solo as an apéritif.
Awards: Decanter Gold (2021 vintage); Decanter Bronze (2022 vintage).
Fakin Teran 2022
One taste of this award-winning Teran and you’ll be smitten
In this fresh and fruity red, Marko shows us why Motovun is a primo region for Teran, Istria’s flagship native variety. Handpicked and aged in stainless steel, his unoaked take on Teran is pure liquid velvet. With ripe berry flavors like cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, and raspberry – plus a touch of spice – it’s a wine you'll reach for time and time again. A vibrant red like this calls for dishes like grilled or roasted beef, pork and lamb, meat-based pasta dishes, and hearty soups and stews.
Awards: 2023 Vinistra Platinum; 2023 Decanter Silver.
Croatian Premium Wine offers these two wines in the U.S.
